Months of the Year in Spanish for Kids (With Audio)

A girl pins twelve seasonal drawings in a circle on her bedroom wall while her grandmother helps

Good news for English-speaking families: most Spanish months look like the English ones (abril, agosto, octubre), so your child can read them almost at once. What is new is the sound. Here are the twelve months with their English meanings, a "say it" guide and Lumi's audio, then birthdays, seasons and two ways to practice.

Spanish writes the months with a small letter; you will see both septiembre and setiembre. Voices: Lumi (AI-generated voice).

The stressed syllable is in capitals: febrero is feh-BREH-roh. Three sounds stand out: j in junio and julio is a breathy h (HOO-nyoh), z in marzo sounds like s in Latin American Spanish, and v in noviembre is close to a soft b.

Birthdays: the question every child wants to answer

  • ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? (KWAHN-doh ehs too koom-pleh-AH-nyohs): "When is your birthday?"
  • Mi cumpleaños es en julio. (mee koom-pleh-AH-nyohs ehs ehn HOO-lyoh): "My birthday is in July."
  • Mi cumpleaños es el 9 de julio. "My birthday is July 9."

Make a family birthday list together: each person, each pet and each grandparent with their month in Spanish. Kids love finding out who has a birthday en diciembre.

Months and seasons

Season Spanish Months (US, UK, Canada)
Winter invierno (een-BYEHR-noh) diciembre, enero, febrero
Spring primavera (pree-mah-BEH-rah) marzo, abril, mayo
Summer verano (beh-RAH-noh) junio, julio, agosto
Fall otoño (oh-TOH-nyoh) septiembre, octubre, noviembre

A fun fact for older kids: in Argentina, Chile and other countries south of the equator, the seasons are the other way around, so diciembre is summer, as it is in Australia.

Two ways to practice the months

  1. Month of the day. On the first day of each month, say the new month at breakfast, ¡Hoy empieza octubre! ("October starts today!"), and let your child find one thing that belongs to it: pumpkins, snow, school, the beach.
  2. Year wheel. Draw twelve small pictures, one per month, and pin them in a circle. Point and say the months in order, then ask your child to find their birthday month.

Twelve words is a lot for a four-year-old; start with the current month and their birthday month. Seven- to nine-year-olds can take on the whole list, a few months at a time. For a realistic plan by age, see our guide to teaching your child Spanish at home.
