What is Lumi Kids?

Lumi Kids is an iPhone, iPad and Android app for children aged 4–12: they learn a language by having a real, live, two-way voice conversation with Lumi, a purple owl. The child speaks into the microphone, Lumi answers instantly, corrects gently and hands out stars for every word said correctly. Around the conversations there are word worlds at the child’s own pace, exercises and the Play Park.

• Free to start: the first two levels (Seed and Sprout, 24 worlds) are free in every language, plus 60 seconds of live talk with Lumi once.
• Lumi Plus: an auto-renewing subscription, monthly or yearly; the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers. It unlocks Sapling and Tree and adds 10 minutes of live talk every week.
• Minute packs: one-off extra talk time that never expires; packs unlock no levels.

The app needs iOS 17 or later on iPhone and iPad, or Android 8.0 or later on Android phones and tablets. There is no account, no advertising and no tracking.

Who is Lumi?

Lumi is a purple owl and an AI voice tutor, not a person. The app tells you, the parent, that Lumi is an AI before you turn live talk on, and live talk stays off until you do. Lumi asks the child questions, listens to the answer, corrects mispronunciation without punishing it, and awards a star for every word spoken correctly. Lumi’s voice is generated by AI; Lumi’s guidance is spoken in the family’s own language.

Which languages does it teach?

The app teaches 11 languages in all: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Chinese (Traditional), Portuguese, Arabic and Turkish. If your family speaks English at home, your child picks one of the other 10; families with another home language, Turkish for example, can choose English as well. Lumi’s guidance is given in the family’s home language — 16 home languages are supported in total. The target language can be changed later, and progress is kept separately per language.

Curriculum: 4 levels, 72 worlds

The journey has four levels: Seed (pre-A1), Sprout (pre-A1), Sapling (A1) and Tree (A2) — 72 worlds in total. Each level ends with a test and a certificate. The first two levels (Seed and Sprout, 24 worlds) are free in every language; Sapling and Tree unlock with Lumi Plus.

Parent controls in the app

• A parent zone protected by a PIN or a multiplication question.
• A daily limit on live talk time that you set, from 5 to 60 minutes.
• A weekly report: talk time, exercises finished, stars and words studied.
• Up to four child profiles on one device.
• Live conversation stays off until a parent turns it on.
• No account, no ads, no tracking.

Where we stand on privacy

The app needs no account and no e-mail, has no advertising or analytics SDK and shows no ads. We never record or store your child’s voice. During live talk the audio goes to our AI provider OpenAI so that Lumi can answer; it is not used for training, and OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse. Details: the Privacy Policy.

This site has free guides, English word lists with audio and printable worksheets for families with children aged 4 to 12. Each language's pages are written for the families who read them, not translated: they start from what parents in that country search for and ask, and from its school curriculum.

• Research. Every page starts from parents' real questions (search suggestions and frequent questions) and from official sources: the school curriculum, ministry and government pages, health organizations, and the App Store listings of the apps we mention.
• Drafting. We draft pages with the help of AI writing tools, then check each one before it goes live.
• Facts and sources. Statements about school curricula, laws, prices and statistics link to the official or original source, with the date we checked it. What we cannot confirm, we remove or soften.
• Lumi Kids facts. What we say about the app comes from the app itself and its App Store listing; prices name the store and the date.
• Review. Every page gets a separate review for facts, sources, language and consistency before it is published.
• AI on this site. Lumi is an AI owl, and the app tells parents so. The word audio on our pages uses Lumi's AI voice, and the illustrations are made with AI image tools.
