Why Portuguese (Brazil)?
Most children who learn Portuguese in the US or the UK have a family reason: a parent or grandparent from Brazil, Portugal or another Portuguese-speaking country. Keeping that language alive gives a child a direct line to relatives and a second home culture.
Lumi speaks Brazilian Portuguese. Portuguese from Portugal is written almost the same, but sounds quite different; Brazilian Portuguese is often described as softer and more open, which makes it easier for beginners to hear.
If your child already learns Spanish, Portuguese will feel familiar: gato, vaca, casa and banana are the same in both. The difference is mostly in the sounds.

Practice at home
- Let relatives lead. Video calls with vovó and vovô are perfect practice; ask them to use Portuguese only, and to slow down.
- Nasal sound game. Hold your nose while saying não, then without: children love feeling where the sound goes.
- Music. Brazilian children's songs and nursery rhymes are an easy way to hear the rhythm every day.
How Lumi teaches it
In Lumi Kids your child starts at Seed, the first of four levels (Seed, Sprout, Sapling and Tree, 72 worlds in all). The 64 words on this page are Seed's eight worlds. Every world has at least six exercises: learn the words, listen and tap, card match, true or false, listen in order and talk with Lumi; higher levels add sentence building, stories and role play. Lumi explains in English and says the new words in Brazilian Portuguese.
From age 7 the app adds reading and spelling in Portuguese.
Seed and Sprout are free, with 60 seconds of live talk to try. Lumi Plus unlocks Sapling and Tree and adds 10 minutes of live talk a week: $14.99 a month or $119.99 a year, and the yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers (App Store US, checked October 5, 2026). Before live talk is turned on, the app tells you, the parent, that Lumi is an AI. Lumi Kids does not record or store your child's voice. More about the app.

Frequently asked questions
Brazilian or European Portuguese?
Lumi teaches Brazilian Portuguese. The two are written almost the same, but European Portuguese sounds different and uses some other everyday words. If your family is from Portugal, your child can learn with Lumi and pick up your accent and words at home.
Does Spanish help with Portuguese?
Yes. Many words are the same or close, and the grammar is similar. The sounds differ more than the words, so listening to Portuguese a lot is the key.
Is Portuguese hard for English speakers?
The nasal vowels and the r are new, but the words are often easy to guess. Young children learn the sounds by copying, especially when relatives speak with them.
