Best Turkish Apps for Kids: Heritage Families and Beginners

A parent and a boy with dark hair in a mint sweater compare two language apps on a tablet, with a glass of tea on a saucer and a strait with a white ferry in the window

A good Turkish app for a child fits the reason your family is learning: a heritage child who understands Turkish needs reading and speaking, a beginner needs words by ear first. For ages 4–6, choose audio-led apps and letter games; at 7–9, reading, which Turkish spelling makes easy; older children need conversation and a course that fits their age.

How we compared

We used only what each provider states on its own website and store listings, and asked every app the same questions. For Turkish, the list of apps is short, so each question narrows the choice quickly.

  • Who it is for. Some Turkish apps are written for children who already hear Turkish at home; others for complete beginners. We say which, where the provider states it.
  • Speaking practice. Turkish has sounds English lacks, such as the undotted ı in kırmızı (red) and the rounded ö and ü in köpek (dog) and süt (milk). The table shows which apps listen through speech recognition and which talk back.
  • Reading needed. Turkish spelling is fully regular: 29 letters, each with one sound, six of them new to English speakers (ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü). Reading can come early, but under 6 an app should still work by ear.
  • Grammar by ear. Turkish builds words with endings, and those endings follow vowel harmony: evler (houses) but kuşlar (birds). Children learn this from hearing many examples, which is what apps with lots of audio provide.
  • Ages, format and pricing model come from the providers; ads and offline use are in the app notes. We list no prices.

Gus on the Go

Gus on the Go: Turkish teaches about 90 first words to children up to 5 through simple games. It needs no reading and is a one-time purchase with no ads and no in-app purchases, a low-risk start for a preschooler.

Kida Apps

Kida Apps' "Turkish Alphabet : Alfabe ABC" is a letter-tracing and letter-sound app for ages 3–5, sold as a subscription on iPhone, iPad and Android. Its App Store listing says no ads while its Google Play listing is labelled "Contains ads", so check the version you install.

Okuyo

Okuyo (ages 4–8) is a Turkish-only reading path from the 29 letters through syllables to 138 narrated stories, aimed at Turkish-speaking and heritage-language families. Speech recognition checks your child reading aloud. It has a free part plus paid content, no ads, and works offline on iPhone, iPad and Android.

Lumi Kids (our app)

Lumi Kids is our app; read this section with that in mind. A child aged 4–12 hears standard Turkish, plays with the words and then speaks with Lumi, an AI owl who explains in English, which suits a child whose stronger language is English. The youngest need no reading; Turkish reading and spelling are added from age 7, and 10- to 12-year-olds get their own talk topics. The free part is the first two levels plus 60 seconds of live talk. Lumi Plus, monthly or yearly and renewing automatically, adds levels three and four and 10 minutes of live talk each week. The app has no ads and works on iPhone, iPad and Android.

Dinolingo

Dinolingo Turkish is one of 50 languages in a single subscription for up to six children, taught through videos, games, songs, books and worksheets without translation, with a speech-recognition speaking feature since June 2026. Stated ages: 2–12 on the App Store, 2–14 on the website and Google Play.

LangsForKids

Turkish For Kids by LangsForKids is an Android-only picture-vocabulary app on topics such as the alphabet, numbers, colors, animals and family, with a free part, paid content and ads.

Duolingo

Duolingo's Turkish course is part of a general app for all ages, not a kids' app, and it expects the learner to read. Its privacy policy allows "Child User" accounts for under-13s, with a username in place of an email and restricted social features. It checks speaking with speech recognition; ads in the free tier are non-personalized for under-16s and disappear with Super Duolingo. Which courses you see depends on the language you learn from.

Which app at which age

Ages 4–6: Turkish by ear. For a heritage child, Turkish at home matters most; an app adds clear words and games (Gus on the Go, Lumi Kids). Fixed phrases help: günaydın in the morning, afiyet olsun at meals, iyi geceler at bedtime. Kida Apps' alphabet tracing can start near 5 for a child who likes letters.

Ages 7–9: reading takes off. Because every Turkish letter has one sound, a child who knows the letters can sound out almost any word. Okuyo is built for exactly this stage, from syllables to stories, and Lumi Kids and Dinolingo add reading next to speaking. Read short Turkish picture books together; children enjoy finding the endings: kedi, kediler, kedilerim.

Ages 10–12: real conversation. Few kids' apps for Turkish state ages this high (Dinolingo, Lumi Kids). A confident reader can try Duolingo with a parent nearby. Video calls with relatives, a Turkish weekend school or a summer in Türkiye do the rest.

Turkish in English-speaking countries: a heritage language

National school data say almost nothing about Turkish. In the NCES School Pulse Panel of January 2024, Turkish did not reach the reporting threshold as a partner language in US public schools' dual-language programs, and it was not among the school subjects with reportable figures (ACTFL report on NCES data, March 2026; checked October 27, 2026). In practice, a child who learns Turkish in the US, the UK, Canada or Australia almost always has Turkish-speaking family.

Many such children understand Turkish but answer in English. An app can help by asking them to speak and read Turkish for a few minutes every day, in a way that feels like play rather than a lesson. It cannot replace a grandmother's stories, a summer with cousins, a teacher at a weekend school or a shelf of Turkish books. Our guide to raising a bilingual child has routines for the "understands but answers in English" stage, and the best age to learn a second language covers when to start.

Free, freemium or subscription?

Turkish apps use three pricing models. One-time purchase: Gus on the Go, paid once with nothing renewing. Free part + paid: Okuyo, Duolingo, LangsForKids and Lumi Kids let your child try part of the app before you buy. Subscription: Dinolingo and Kida Apps renew until you cancel.

With so few options, try two at once: one for reading or letters, one for speaking, a few minutes each day for a week. Watch whether your child answers in Turkish more often afterwards. Mark the last day of any trial on your calendar. To cancel on an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name and choose Subscriptions; on Android, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture and go to Payments & subscriptions. Deleting an app does not end its subscription.

The 64 first Turkish words with Lumi's voice and a say-it guide are on Turkish for kids. Comparisons for the other nine languages are on the languages for kids hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Turkish app for children of Turkish-speaking families abroad?

Okuyo states that it is aimed at Turkish-speaking and heritage-language families: a reading path from the 29 letters through syllables to 138 narrated stories, with read-aloud checking. For a child whose stronger language is English, Lumi Kids teaches Turkish with Lumi explaining in English.

Which Turkish app helps my child learn to read Turkish?

Okuyo is built for reading: letters, then syllables, then narrated stories, with speech recognition that checks your child reading aloud (ages 4–8). Kida Apps' Turkish alphabet app teaches letter tracing and letter sounds for ages 3–5, and Lumi Kids adds Turkish reading and spelling from age 7.

Which Turkish apps let my child speak?

Okuyo checks reading aloud with speech recognition, Dinolingo added a speech-recognition feature in June 2026, Duolingo uses speech recognition, and Lumi Kids holds a spoken conversation with an AI owl. Gus on the Go, Kida Apps and LangsForKids don't state speaking practice.

Is Turkish hard for English-speaking children?

The sounds and spelling are easy to learn: every letter is always said the same way. The new part is grammar, with endings added one after another (ev, house; evim, my house; evimde, in my house) and vowels in the endings that change to match the word. Children pick up the pattern by hearing it often.

Is there a Turkish app for a 3-year-old?

Gus on the Go (ages 0–5), Kida Apps' Turkish alphabet app (3–5) and Dinolingo (from 2) state ages that include 3. At that age, a few minutes of words and songs with you beside them, plus Turkish from family, is plenty.

Do Turkish apps for kids show ads?

Okuyo, Gus on the Go, Dinolingo and Lumi Kids state no ads. Kida Apps' Turkish app says no ads on the App Store but is labelled "Contains ads" on Google Play; LangsForKids shows ads, and so does Duolingo's free tier.

Let your child learn by talking with Lumi

In the Lumi Kids app, Lumi the AI owl talks with your child, corrects gently and hands out stars. Ages 4–12, no ads. The first two levels and the first minute of live conversation are free.
